Facciotti tames the mud of Ste. Thecle and extends championship points lead.

Klatt & Facciotti on the PodiumTeam Toyota Yamaha Red Bull Blackfoot Fox Racing’s Colton Facciotti kept the Blackfoot magic alive on July 26, 2009 with a solid second place finish in what many described as one of the worst mud races in Canadian motocross history. Heavy and unrelenting rains transformed the ordinarily dry and hard packed Ste. Thecle, QC circuit into a nearly impassable quagmire, but Facciotti rode a smart and consistent race to put his Yamaha YZ450F on the podium and further extend his MX1 series points lead.

“It was dirty out there for sure,” Colton said of the challenging track conditions. “As far as mud races go this was one of the worst; right up there with Morden back in 2007. I got pretty lucky on the start when a bunch of guys went down in the first turn and I was able to scoot around inside of everybody. Dusty KlattI made it into second pretty quickly but rather than try and take a run at the leader I decided to play it safe for the championship and keep it on two wheels.”

Unfortunately Colton wouldn’t get a chance to better his finish on the day. The course was in fact so difficult to navigate that the promoters had no choice but to cancel the second set of motos, leaving the first moto scores to determine the overall winners. Colton’s Toyota Yamaha Red Bull Blackfoot Fox Racing teammates Dusty Klatt, Kyle Beaton, and Aron Harvey were all hoping for better finishes after their respective battles with the Ste. Thecle track. Klatt did not share Facciotti’s luck in MX1 as the slick conditions caused him to fall several times and he was forced to make a mid moto stop for goggles; all of which cost him several positions as he fell from 4th place back to 10th at the finish. In MX2, Beaton’s moto went much the same as Klatt’s as he went from 3rd place back to 8th courtesy of a goggle stop and some difficulty getting through lapped traffic. Harvey had the worst luck of all as he missed a turn on the first lap after being blinded by roost from another rider and sank his bike in a trackside water hole, ending his race before it really began. Beaton speaks about the difficulties with the muddy conditions: “I came to one part of the track that was completely plugged off with downed riders. I tried to go around them but got stuck. It took me a while to get going again and by then I had gone back quite a ways but I just tried to keep moving forward and I managed to make it up to eighth at the finish. It was pretty disappointing but that’s racing I guess, you never really know what’s going to happen and you just have to make the best of it.”

Team manager Joe Skidd sums up the race day: “I definitely think we can call that one a race for the ages. To come out of a day like that without any mechanical troubles and a podium finish is definitely a testament to the skill of our riders, the dedication of our support staff, and the durability of our Yamaha YZFs. Colton was able to make up a few more points in the championship chase and we are definitely in good shape for the remaining three rounds. Kyle Beaton gets the HoleshotAlso, our team would like to thank the CMRC for making the decision to cancel the second set of motos today. It was unfortunate for some of our riders and especially the fans but given the horrendous track conditions it was the only reasonable option. Hopefully the weather cooperates next weekend in Moncton and we can put on a better show for all our fans and supporters on the east coast.”

Colton Facciotti and the rest of the Toyota Yamaha Red Bull Blackfoot Fox racing team will be bringing the Blackfoot magic to the east on August 1st-2nd at Riverglade MX Park in Moncton, NB.
